I began learning German at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, MN and went on to earn a degree in German language and literature at the University of St. Andrews, with a year of study at Friedrich-Alexander Universität, Erlangen. After graduating I was hired by Juve Verlag für juristische Information in Cologne. Although I left to pursue an advanced degree, Juve employed me for many years on a freelance basis to translate their guide to the German legal market.
At university, I excelled at literary translation, winning the George and Margaret Cumming Gray prize in my final year for a translation of Theodor Storm’s “Hyazinthen”. Having read widely in English and German, I am able to identify and deal with allusions to literature, folklore, history, and music.
As an American who was educated in Britain, I can produce texts in either American or British English.
I am ATA certified from German into English.
